This collection consists of papers relating to Capt. William Kidd ( -1701) and Capt. Cyprian Southack (1662-1745). The papers relating to Kidd include newspaper and magazine articles and copies of an article written by Edmonds titled, "Captain William Kidd, Pirate or Gentleman." The papers relating to Southack include notes, newspaper articles, correspondence, a copy of a publication written by Southack concerning the New England seacoast, copies of papers concerning Southack, located predominantly in the Mass. Archives, from 1694 to 1730, and material on Southack family genealogy. The collection also includes newspaper articles concerning pirates and photostatic copies of old maps, illustrations of pirates, and title pages of publications concerning pirates. In addition, there are letters, 1915, to Frederick Lewis Gay thanking him for sending copies of "A New Map of New England from Cape Cod to Cape Sables" by Thomas Pound ( -1703).

William Kidd (b. 1654, Dundee, Scotland-d. 23 May 1701, Wapping, England) was also known as Captain William Kidd or Captain Kidd and infamous pirate. He settled in New York City and by 1689 was a member of a French-English pirate crew sailing the Caribbean under Captain Jean Fantin. John Henry Edmonds (1873-1929), son of Michael and Joanna M. L. Fechter Edmonds, was born in Boston, Mass. After graduating from the Boston English High School in 1891, he worked in the city surveyor's office until 1895 and then in the city engineer's office unitl 1907.
